Lebeha Drumming Center: Keeping Tradition & Culture Alive

Belize is home to an Abundance of beautiful cultures and ethnic groups such as Mestizo, East Indian, Creole, Chinese, Mennonite, Maya, and Garifunan. The Garifunan's rich culture is strong in Stann Creek primarily is the village of Hopkins which is a peaceful place near the coast where they have fishing shakes and fruit trees. The Garifunan's culture is filled with the sounds of drums; at the Lebeha Drumming Center the Garifunans play drums, sing, and dance in traditional clothing. Their drumming skills are past down the generations from father to son. The Garifunan language is unique and sound sweet and beautiful when singers sing in unison, they sing about their common daily life. The dancers make a gesticulating movements to the beat of the drums, they have a particular cultural tradition where a male where a colorful mask, black and white, with stands of shells tied around their knees. The pink mask represents slave owners during the British colonial era, the two dressed up dancers dance furiously as the drummers watch their feet trying to follow the dancers moves with the beat of the drum. On November 19th Garfunans have a huge celebration every year with tradition music, dance and food. This is only one ethnic aspect of the culture in Belize.
